Aim
To identify areas of good practice and areas requiring improvement in the quality of care provided for patients admitted to hospital with acute sigmoid volvulus

Participation
All hospitals in England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Jersey, which admit and treat patients with acute sigmoid volvulus.

Patient Identification Spreadsheet
We will identify a sample of patients who were admitted to hospital between 01/01/2025 and 31/12/2025 with acute sigmoid volvulus. A spreadsheet will be disseminated to our Local Reporters to populate with basic details about patients who fit the criteria to participate in the study.
The deadline for return of spreadsheets is 30th September 2026.


Clinician Questionnaire
Should be completed by the clinician responsible for the patient at the time of discharge.

Patient Survey
We are looking to recruit patients or carers/ family members of patients with acute sigmoid volvulus, to help us with the design of the study. If you are interested, please contact asv@ncepod.org.uk

Case note extracts for review
Case notes will be requested for all patients included in the peer review aspect of the study.

Organisational Questionnaire
An organisational questionnaire will be sent to all hospitals which admit and treat patients with acute sigmoid volvulus.
